A Legacy of Changemakers: Ten Years of Impact in the Community and at the Capitol
Wilder’s Community Equity Program (CEP) started with a simple observation. Minnesota’s legislative spaces did not reflect the communities they served. The challenge was clear: How do you bring historically marginalized BIPOC community members to the table to advocate for change?
Ten years since the launch of CEP, and nearly 150 alumni later, the program has built on its original vision to provide individuals with the tools they need to be at the forefront of political conversations. CEP brings together Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color for an immersive nine-month political leadership program designed to develop key legislative skills, build connections with people and communities, and cultivate personal leadership.
During the nine months, participants in CEP sharpen their advocacy skills while dreaming and envisioning a Capitol that truly represents the diversity of the state. In addition to learning about government structures and the legislative processes in a cohort setting, participants actively engage in hearing simulations and build key connections with lobbyists, advocacy organizations, state agency staff and legislators. CEP participants come to understand the immense value of their own lived experiences and insights within their communities. Equipped with the skills acquired through the program, they are able to effectively advocate for causes and communities they are passionate about.
Being a changemaker looks different for everyone. We've seen our graduates become public officials, champion state laws, and help their communities thrive with their expertise. What we hope our alumni take with them, no matter what they do next, is that they are changemakers—capable of changing systems and making life better for future generations.
The history and lived experiences that BIPOC community members bring are crucial to advancing justice at the Capitol. This past October we kicked off our 10th and largest cohort since CEP’s inception. We are excited for how this amazing group of individuals will add to the legacy of the Community Equity Program.
