Everything you need to know about Election Day

Over the last few weeks, we have shared election resources that we hope will support you in making your voice heard come Election Day. As we have discussed, Minnesota provides a multitude of avenues to cast your ballot and exercise your civic duty. We understand that the amount of information available can be overwhelming, so for our last Election Series post we have decided to compile everything you need in one place.

First things first, who’s on the ballot?

Each ballot will look a bit different based on where you live. Some notable elections include our gubernatorial elections (governor), and all seats in the Minnesota legislature. You can view your sample ballot by address here.

All MN voters will have these races on their general election ballot:

• U.S. Representative
• Governor & Lt. Governor
• Secretary of State
• State Auditor
• Attorney General
• State Senator
• State Representative
• Judicial seats

MN Voters may have one or more of these races on their ballot:

• County Officials
• City Officers
• School Board Members
• Township Officers
• Local ballot questions

Registering to vote

In order to vote, you must be registered. You can check your registration status online. If you’re not registered, you have up until Election Day to register. If registering to vote at your polling place on Election Day or at an early voting location, you will need proof of residence. Learn more about what you need when registering to vote in person.

Casting your ballot

In Minnesota you have a few ways to cast your ballot. You can vote by mail or vote in person. To vote by mail, you would typically apply for an absentee ballot online but due to the short amount of time until Election Day, it is currently discouraged to apply for an absentee ballot online. You can still vote early with an absentee ballot at your local elections office. If your ballot is not received by Election Day, it will not be counted.

Where to vote?

On Election Day you can register to vote at your local polling station AND cast your ballot there. You can enter your zip code or county here to find your local polling place.
